What is linen?

Flax was grown in Lithuania 4000 years ago. Linen is a unique plant that people use for food, clothing and treatment of various diseases. It is the only plant that the Lithuanian nation consume in its entirety – from the top to the roots. The most popular product from flax fibres is linen fabrics. However, there is a long route from flax yarn to linen material.

Flax fibre is extracted from the flax plant Linum usitatissimum. It is an annual plant that lives for one growing season. Yarn preparation is a complex process that starts with removing seeds and leaves from the plant’s stems. The method includes rippling, retting, dying, breaking, scutching and hackling (combing). Then flax fibre is produced. From the fibre, the linen products are manufactured.

The best flax fibre is obtained when flax is grown in cooler weather and is harvested at early yellow maturity. That is why the Lithuanian climate is highly suitable for flax growing.

The natural colour of linen fabrics is a warm grey, but many manufacturers can colour their linen products in many colours and shades. However, linen lovers appreciate the natural shade of this material rather than the coloured ones.

is soft, durable, does not stretch and is perfect for hot summer days. The linen material does not fade in the sun. With its smooth texture, it is ideal to use in the bathroom and kitchen. Thanks to these benefits, different linen products such as linen tablecloths, duvet covers, bed linens, linen sheets, napkins, table linens, linen table runners, pillowcases, towels or aprons are made. Everything can be made from linen fabric because its authentic texture makes any item a little more special.
